A bit of a problem....

Hey Effurry body! Pollux here. We've been away for a furry long time. Meommy has been furry busy with work and with our bean's preschool. We understand meommy's work is furry kewl, but we've missed our furriends.

We've been having a bit of troubles that we've been having a hard time admitting to, and a tougher time finding a solution. You see, Castor has been getting more like a feral cat. Effurry month that goes by, he gets worser and worser. It started out OK.. When we first came to our home, Castor would growl at the bean when she came into meommy's room in the morning. But, he wouldn't hide when she was awake. It progressed and he would hide when the bean was around. H'e gotten to the point that only meommy can be around him. If daddy and the bean are around, he won't even come out for stinky goodness. He still sleeps in the bed with meommy and daddy. That's the only time he will tolerate being in close proximity to daddy anymore.

Let me stress that daddy and the bean have NEVER done anything mean to Castor. And the vet has checked Castor out. He's physically fine. But he's got a heck of a mean streak. He doesn't like playing wif me anymore. When I try to play, Castor runs away or fights back aggressively. I just want to play, but Castor, well, he hurts me sometimes and I gets scratches on me.

Meommy and daddy have been trying furry hard to coax Castor out of his shell, but he just seems to be getting progressively worse. It breaks meommy's heart to think of separating us. It breaks my heart too. We're looking for any recommendations of how to work wif him and make him less scardy and aggressive. He's furry growly and scratchy, and bitey. We don't think his quality of life is furry good since he hides all day. Please let us know if you can think of anything we can do to bring him around.

Wow. I have no ideas. Was there any change in the environment that could be causing this? Are there any sorts of clothing that cause a problem (making odd sounds). And the vet knows that this is the reason they are checking Castor out? What have they suggested?

We're sorry that Castor is having problems. Mum has never encountered anything like this, and all we can say is to endorse everything that Chey and Gemini suggested. We'll purr for you guys, 'cos it must be confusing for everyone in the family just now.

Hmm....that is very puzzling indeed. I would guess there may be a change in the environment or something of that sort too if there's nothing wrong with Caster's health. I'm purring for him.

There has been no change. Castor has never been quite social. He started out as a kitten growling at the bean when she'd come in the room. But at that time, he'd stay in the room and not hide. By last Christmas he was hiding when the bean was awake or home. Now he hides with daddy is around too. Over the past year, it's just progressed to this point.

Meommy read something about keeping him in an enclosed room or a at cage with no hidey places and giving him yummy treats and sort of forcing him to get back used to being around people. Meommy is afraid that will make things worse instead of better.

The vet knows it's a problem and said he might be happier in a quiet home with no kids or other pets. Maybe a home with an older person who he could bond with. He has bonded with meommy. She's the only one he will tolerate being around.

It's stressful because meommy and daddy want to be responsible and don't want Castor to have to go to a new home. But maybe our home isn't the right one for his personality?

We just don't know what to do.

Gosh, that is very puzzling. I wish I had some advice. I can only think of small things to try like a Feliway diffuser. I know there are also anti-anxiety medications that can be tried, but I don't know much about their effectiveness.

We contacted the breeder and she has suggested giving Castor his own room and letting him slowly get used to people and giving him lots of good treats when we are around. We really, really hope he starts to come around. Meommy thinks her office would be a good place. There's not too many hidey places in there. We just really hope he can get less fearful so he can have a good quality of life. Sure doesn't seem like hiding all day is a good quality of life.

Mom gives St. John's Wort drops to Charmee (the ones with no alcohol in 'em) an' puts some drops of Good Cat (from Petco) in our water to mellow efurryone out. Perhaps those? Or maybe Rescue Remedy (although not efurryone agrees about the merits of RR in kitties).
Good luck ...

I know the vet checked him out but this sort of behavior change might be more involved? I just know that with this much fear from nowhere (we know your humans are wonderful) that maybe there is something wrong with his brain or something? Maybe he fell and hurted it playing hard and bruised it? We're not doctors but we do have to see Castor unhappy and your family too.
